Using your Student Railcard

When you can save with your Student Railcard?

A student railcard is a great way for students in full time education to save when buying train tickets. You can pick one up online or at a manned train station for the current price £28. Once you have your student railcard you will be able to save 1/3 off the price of train tickets. You will also be able to receive discounts for restaurants, trips out and hotels.

It is also possible to save when buying your student railcard. Use a student railcard promotional code when buying online.

Railcard Pormotional Code:

The 1/3 saving with a student railcard can be applied to pretty much all standard fare travel. And one of the greatest things with a Student Railcard is its one of the very few railcards for which peak time train tickets (meeting a minimum amount) are also eligible for the saving.

Use a student railcard for the following ticket types:

  • Standard Anytime single and return
  • Standard Off-Peak single and return
  • Standard Super Off-Peak single and return
  • Standard and First Class Advance – When you pre-booked before travel
  • Most Rail Rovers
  • The Weekender
  • Some weekend First Class upgrade options

If you live in or around London or are planning to study in London you can really make great use of your student railcard. Firstly, if you fly into or out of London then you can use your student railcard for the services that run between London and the London airports. Use your student railcard for the Gatwick Express, Stansted Express, Heathrow Express and the Heathrow Connect.

If you live and travel within London you can have your student railcard put onto your Oyster card. This means you can save 1/3 off the daily price cap on your Oyster card. Take your student railcard with your registered Oyster card to any tube station, fill out a form and have the two cards added together. If your Oyster card is not currently registered you can do this at the same time.

So long as it meets the minimum fare restrictions you are also able to use your student railcard to receive discounts on off-peak day Travelcards zones 1-6, while commuting in London.

When you are not able save with your Student Railcard

To be eligible for a student railcard you will need to be in full time education, which means you will need to be at school, college or university for at least 15 hours per week, and for at least 20 weeks of the year. You also need to be between the ages of 16 and 25, although if you are over the age of 25 in full time education you can still buy a student railcard. You will just need to buy yours from a manned station and not online. Unfortunately this means you won’t be able to use a 16-25 railcard promotional code buying online.

A student railcard can be used for peak weekday travel, which is a journey where you reach your destination before 10am. The only restriction here is that different ticket types have a minimum spend before discount can be applied. This currently stands at £12 minimum before being able to get discount with your student railcard.

The following train tickets are not eligible for discount with your student railcard:

  • Season Tickets with includes Travelcard Season tickets
  • Eurostar tickets
  • Most First Class fares – you can use your student railcard for first class advance with some train operators
  • Specific rail company promotional offers
  • And a few more specific tickets, please check out the 16-25 railcard website for further information

You may still be able to get a railcard promotional code to use against the above tickets.
